How I Contour | Feat. Chanel Bronze Universal & Swatches

It was an exciting day when I first purchased Chanel's ever so famous 'Bronze Universal' let me tell you! I took it home, placed it delicately on my bathroom counter and cherished its very existence in my makeup collection, but there was one problem - I was at a complete loss of how best to use it. I googled it, I tweeted about it, and I googled it some more - but each time I'd receive a multitude of different answers of how best to apply it. The lady at the Chanel counter suggested I used a flat foundation brush to work it into the skin for contouring - and for a while that was the method I used. Although it worked, the method just didn't float my boat - it may have been the brush I was using but I felt as if I needed to test a slightly different approach. So, I took it upon myself to test and try all kinds of different ways of working with it until I settled upon one that worked for me and one that provided me with the best results. Mission accomplished. 

As some of you may know, I'm a massive fan of contouring. I naturally have quite defined cheekbones and they're something I like to accentuate more when I can - simply because they give my face definition and shape and they're a feature I feel I need to make the best of! I've been contouring for a few years now - ever since I first learnt 'the secret' (ooo 'the secret'..) of how to make your face appear more sculpted - my makeup collection is full of all sorts of highlighters, base products and sculpting essentials. Chanel's Bronze Universal provides the most natural looking 'skin-like' finish and works very well with my skin tone. Here's my step by step for my current contouring routine I use for my cheekbones..

1. Apply your base | I use Yves Saint Laurent's 'Touche Eclat' foundation in 'B40' and buff this into the skin using my Real Techniques Buffing Brush.  This is the only brush I find works with this foundation and together they are an absolute cosmetic dream team! This stage provides a flawless looking 'blank canvas' ready for sculpting (I apply a primer beforehand too - just to make sure my makeup is being applied on a clean, smooth base).

2 & 3. Chanel Bronze Universal | If you're unsure how or where to place the line of contour, a good way to find your natural cheekbone 'shape' is to simply pull a fish face. Not at all attractive but suck in your cheeks for a second and you'll notice where your natural line is (google this method if you're unsure!) You can see where I've placed my line of contour - I always begin near my hairline and apply most of the product here, as this is where I want my contour to be strongest and where there is naturally more shadow on the face. I then take the product down near to wear my inner cheek is - making sure that the line there is slightly thinner than it is near to my hairline. 

I do this using my fingers or a flat foundation brush - but if I'm honest I find using my fingers to apply this works better than a brush - as the product is warmed up and can be moulded into the skin more (of course if you're going to do it this way then it goes without saying to make sure you're hands are squeaky clean before doing this step..)

4. Buffing using Real Techniques Buffing Brush | Buff the line you have just made into the skin using a buffing brush - making sure the movements you use are along the same 'line'. You don't want to be swirling the brush all over your cheeks as this will ruin the whole effect!

5. Mac Mineralise Skinfinsh Natural in 'Medium' | I then apply my Mac MSF using my Real Techinques powder brush. This sets the base I have just applied.  As a general rule, any 'wet' product you apply to your face should be applied before your powder - and any powder products applied afterwards. You know it makes sense... ;)

6. Optional Step - Sleek Contour Kit in 'Light' | Sometimes, the contour I created with the Chanel is enough for me. On other occasions, I want a little bit more 'oomph' (nights out for example) - this is when I apply the matte bronzing powder from this palette. I use my Real Techniques Contouring brush to do this as i find it works well with my powder products, and simply go over the line I've just created, being careful to blend it in properly. It can sometimes look a little 'muddy' if you over apply so paler skin tones - take heed! I then apply the highlighting powder across the top of my cheekbones (just underneath the eye area) and sweep this up to my hairline. 

7. Blush | I apply my blush of choice on the apples of my cheeks and take it up slightly near my hairline - this way I have the highlight, blush and contour all merged together and running the same way.  I used Benefit's Coralista blush in this example - if you're wondering!

8. Contouring complete! If you're still unsure, it helps to look at your face from different angles in a mirror and realise where light naturally hits, and where shadow naturally falls (looking up into a mirror highlights the lighter areas, and vice versa). I then usually take my contouring underneath my jawline and onto my forehead using the same method (again, google this as there's tonnes of images of where to place contour & highlight - it's generally made in a '3' shape around the side of the face)


The way you work with this product depends on what kind of look you want to go for. A flat kabuki brush will work wonders for an all over bronzing base, but when it comes to contouring, the softness of the line you use is key to creating a natural looking, flawless finish. The texture of the Bronze Universal is very blendable - almost like a hybrid of a mousse and a cream. It's also very buildable and is a product that can be used in a multitude of ways. This is just how I contour my cheekbones - you might find another way works better for you but this gets the best results for me personally! Kim Kardashian - eat yer heart out, petal!

Big Clothing Haul | River Island, ASOS, Topshop, Primark & More

Hiddely-ho ladies! I do hope you've all had lovely weeks - you may have noticed I've gone a little bit 'off schedule' with my blog recently (I usually post on the same 3 days each week).. I do hope you can forgive my higgeldy-piggledy-ness (hows that for a mouthful?) the past couple of weeks or so but I'm currently doing my Final Major Project at uni and it's taking up a great deal of my spare time. I shall be sure to post some photos and a link to my 'graphic design-y' blog when I'm all done and dusted for those of you who might fancy a nosey! Anyway.. excuses and explanations aside, I thought I'd kick off this week with a clothing haul - because, lets face it, who doesn't love a good nose through people's shopping bags?! I know I do...

I was online shopping on Topshop recently because I needed a simple little black cami (i haven't photographed it but I picked up this one) and before I went to the checkout i spotted this little 'bunny ear' styled scrunchie. I thought it was so cute and I always shove my hair up in ponytails and buns when I'm around the house so this will add a touch of girlie-ness to my hair when I want to wear it up.

I've been after some more jewellery for a while to wear with t-shirts and high necked tops - this little pack from H&M was a bargain (around the £10 mark) and there's something there for every occasion and outfit. H&M do some fabulous jewellery - and I can't wait to head back and grab a few more pieces from there.

I'm in love with this little red number! I have no idea where I'm going to wear it yet - I think it's quite a versatile piece and it can work for day or night. I might wear it to uni soon with a little black cami underneath and some patterned tights. The colour is just so pretty - such a vibrant red.. (think Mac's 'Lady Danger' lipstick in clothing-form!) and I shall be adorning this for a night out in the near future I'm sure!

I picked up the lace dress a few weeks ago now - they were out of stock of my size everywhere but I was determined to get it. Luckily, one came available on ASOS and I put it in my shopping basket sharpish! I haven't worn it yet but as soon as the sun comes out I'll be wearing this everywhere - I'm just completely and utterly in love with it.  The v-neck bodysuit is also from ASOS, and I've bought this to wear on a night out in the next week or so with my disco pants and killer heels! The shoulder pads add some statement detail and make it perfect for a night out on the tiles - i'm always wearing dresses out in the evening and I very much fancied a change!

H&M had a cracking sale on! So i picked up a couple of blazers - this hot pink one being my favourite! I've wanted a fuchsia blazer for ages now and I was superly-duperly chuffed to grab this one in the sale for just £7! I get so much wear out of blazers - they just add a bit of 'professional chic' to any outfit.  The shift dress is such a staple item in my wardrobe and I also have it in black (if you like something you must buy it in every single colour after all!) It's one of those items that will take you from 'office to bar' in the blink of an eye and at £19.99 it didn't break the bank either.

The bird jumper from New Look just had to be mine... I have no excuse or justification for buying it really..apart from the fact it has bird print all over it and therefore it would have been criminal if i'd not took home to the safety of my wardrobe where nobody else could get their little mitts on it...  I saw the 'eyelash cardigan' on LLMLRS's YouTube and knew I had to have it. It looks amazing with leather trousers and a plain top and just adds a bit of texture to an outfit. It's really snuggly and warm and will take me through to Spring. It was also reduced to £25 in the sale - fandabbydoozy if i don't say so myself!

And last but not least, no shopping trip is complete without a shuffle around Primark! I picked up the selection of jumpers a while back now as they were only £6 each and I get so much wear out of things like this - they're perfect for wearing with disco pants or leggings, or with jeans on my 'slobby days'. The peplum top is my favourite buy - seeing it on the hanger just doesn't do it justice though and I must make a point of doing an Outfit post with this pretty soonish! It's so figure-hugging and flattering and looks lovely with my Topshop Leigh jeans (and was a complete bargain at just £7!)

Bourjois Rouge Edition Lipsticks | Thoughts & Swatches

As you're all probably aware by now - I cannot resist a lippie or two. No matter how hard I try not to let temptation grab hold of me, it always does where lipsticks are concerned (willpower isn't a word I'm familiar with - clearly). Bourjois Rouge Editions didn't escape my beady eyes and in true beauty blogger fashion I set out one heck of a mission to add a few of them to my collection.  After a great deal of lurking round the Bourjois stand and swatching lines all the way up my arms (standard procedure for a blogger), I settled on these 3 as my 'chosen ones'. 

04 | Rose Tweed | A beautiful Rosy brown shade that is very much a 'your lips but better' kind of colour for those understated days where you just one a little lift. I think this one has to be my favourite of the bunch - purely because it's so wearable and looks so flattering and natural - it really enhances the lips without looking false or overdone and it just adds a little bit of 'oomph' to bare lips.

08 | Rose Studio | A vibrant true pink shade that verges on the side of blue toned ever so slightly.  I adore pinks, so this one simply had to find it's way into my lipstick drawer. It's one of those lipsticks you could use on a night out or in the daytime, and is probably the most versatile of the three.

07 | Fuchsia Graffiti | This is my favourite type of pink to wear if I'm going out or simply just want to make a bit of a statement in the day. It's a bright, fuchsia pink and the most pigmented of the bunch.

At £7.99 they aren't the cheapest of the drugstore lipsticks but certainly pack a punch with pigmentation and finish. I was unsure of the shape at first, but the flat tip makes it so easy to create an even line around the lips and rules out the need for lip liner.  They're very decently pigmented, and the colours show up on the lips pretty much true to the colour in the tube. I'm also a big fan of the slightly glossy/satin finish they give - they don't feel drying at all and I get a decent bit of wear time out of them before the need to reapply.

Rouge Editions are available in 18 shades ranging from barely there nudes to classic reds and deep plums - so there's something in the collection for everyone and every occasion - I really want to try 'Peche Cosy', 'Orange Pop' and 'Rouge Buzz' next.. I shall keep you updated on here if I end up buying any more of course!

Benefit | They're Real Mascara

Mascara is one thing I'm extremely fussy with. I either love them, or hate them. It's never an in-between 'ahh well I suppose you're alright' kind of jobby..it's either one extreme or the other (mascara is very much the 'Marmite' of the cosmetic world for me!) Over the past couple of weeks, I've fallen in love with Benefit's They're Real mascara.. I wasn't expecting to if I'm honest - I've never had the best of relationships with plastic brushes, I'd convinced myself it was overpriced and that it was something I could go without. Well, I eat my words...

I figured I'd opt for the miniature version to begin with - spending £9 seems better than splashing out £18 if you aren't going to agree with a product. At first, I'll be honest, I wasn't reaching for it as much as I thought I would and I felt a little bit indifferent towards it. I thought I'd give it a few more attempts - and a couple of weeks on I found myself applying it everyday. My lashes are long, but they never really hold much curl - they're pretty much straight and no amount of eyelash curling gets them to hold a good 'swoop'.. Benefit's They're Real gives the illusion that I have curlier, and indeed somewhat 'swoopier' eyelashes and makes the most of their length.  The wand is actually really fabulous, it picks up every single lash - even the thin little piddly ones.. it grabs eyelashes I never knew I had and visibly lengthens. The little ball at the end of the wand can be held vertically and used to coat lashes on the outer and inner corners of the eye - providing much more scope for application. The colour is also JET black - it looks dramatic and dark, and the mascara just fans out your lashes and frames your eyes perfectly. 

The formula is quite thick - but it doesn't clump. Obviously if you go ahead and apply coats of the stuff it's going to clog slightly but I apply two coats and that's just about right for me (not of fan of spidery-lashes! We've all been there, made the mistake and got the t-shirt..) It separates and fans out the lashes, and I notice very little smudging throughout the day - it jolly well stays put! In fact - this can be quite difficult to get off - even more so than my waterproof mascaras! So bare that in mind if you like to take your makeup off with ease - Benefit's They're Real is a little bugger to remove ;)

So.. will I be repurchasing is the question? Yes, I will, but maybe not every time I need a new mascara - the £18 price tag is a little steep and although I do think it's worth it for a high quality mascara - it's something I buy too often to justify every single time I require a new one. But I most definitely will be investing in the full-sized tube as soon as this one has seen it's day - it makes for such a lovely mascara treat! It is currently the best selling mascara in the UK.. and it's safe to say that I can certainly see why!

Mac Haul | Lipsticks, Eye Kohl & 'Turquatic'

Oh deary me. Look what happened. Beth walks into Mac and yet again comes away with more than one 'little treat'. Ok, so I didn't buy all of this stuff in one go - that would be rather extravagant of me to say the least, but I have indulged in a bit of cosmetic related retail therapy just recently. I decided to grab a few more lipsticks - Mac are without a doubt my favourite brand to go for if I wish to treat myself to a new lippie or two... I just can't resist them and there's something rather fulfilling about building up my collection and seeing them all in my lipstick drawer stacked neatly next to one another.. (just me, no?) Anyway, I thought it was about time I shared my purchases with you all...

Mac Red | Satin | I actually went in with the intention of buying Russian Red - but I much preferred this shade as it's ever so slightly brighter.  I also don't find Satin as drying as the matte finishes.

Creme d' Nude | Cremesheen | I've been after a pale nude for a while now and it was a toss up between this one and Myth. Myth was just a little bit too much for me so I settled on this one - much more wearable for me and a shade that is a must-have in my collection. Perfect for pairing with smokey eyes or 'understated' days.

Half n Half | Amplified | I've wanted a muted brown toned nude for a while now. I actually bought Velvet Teddy a while back but it's just far too dark for me at the moment (you can view it in my Mac Lipstick Collection post here)- Half n Half is just that touch lighter and looks much more 'me'.

Up The Amp | Amplified | Definitely an impulse buy! I've wanted it for ages as I don't have many purple shades. This one is perfect as it's vibrant but isn't too dark for my skin tone - it's quite a quirky, fun shade!

Chatterbox | Amplified | I've wanted this for donkeys! This lipstick was made for me - from the vibrant pink tone even down to the name (if I was a Mr Men character I would most definitely be Little Miss Chatterbox...) I actually picked this up in a blog sale and I was so chuffed to bits to get my hands on it!

Mac Eye Kohl in 'Smolder' | I've never actually tried any of Mac's pencil liners! Shocking I know but I just think a smokey black liner is a staple item in any make-up bag and this one is renowned for it's staying power.

Mac Perfume in 'Turquatic' | Me and my perfumes.. honestly. I think I have some sort of strange obsession with buying scents! This one is gorgeous and it's the definition of a summer perfume! I cannot wait to spritz this as soon as the sunshine comes out!

...woops. What can I say.. these pesky little items just took a leap into my hands, dragged me to the till and forced me to pay for them.. I think I shall have to be doing an updated Mac Lipstick Collection post pretty soonish at this rate! Eek! Next on my wish list is 'Morange', 'Milan Mode' and 'Blankety'... and I wouldn't say no to 'Fanfare' either.. Goodness me there's no hope for my bank account is there?

Barry M Gelly Hi-Shine Polishes

When it comes to nail polishes, Barry M have to be unbeatable for getting quality and price bang on the mark. Being a complete sucker for anything that has the word 'new' on the packaging, I treated myself to some of Barry M's Gel polishes a while back now. I remember wishing they would bring out more colours as I was instantly sold on the glossy finish and faultless application and really fancied adding a few more to my collection. Well, I can tell you it was a very exciting day when I heard of the Spring Collection being released and I dashed into Superdrug at the next given opportunity.  I just couldn't decide on which one I liked best.. so i adopted the whole 'buy it in every colour' motto and ended up with a my hands full of all four colours, doing a little balancing act at the till with all my other beauty-related goods before almost tipping them over the poor lady about to zap them through. Standard shopping trip for me. She did have a little giggle with me at my 'forgot to pick up a basket but I shall battle on through' skills though..

As you can probably tell, I love a good pastel polish, me. Don't get me wrong, I adore my reds and classy darker colours, but pastels always look nice and fresh on the nails and cover up all matter of nail sins.  With Spring coming up, I will definitely be bringing out the brighter colours in my collection and I can't wait until I can pair these beauties with my summery outfits! 

The Spring Collection consists of 4 colours - 
'Lychee' being a lovely classic nude shade which is perfect for those understated days or for work/job interviews, and also not dissimilar to Models Own 'Utopia' (which I've wanted for ages!).
'Papaya' is a gorgeous bright peachy orange - which I'm saving until the sun comes out as I can only imagine how amazing it will look with a tan!  
'Dragon' is an adorable pastel pink that is a must-have for any polish collection - it looks lovely any time of the year and I've been wearing this quite a bit recently as it's so versatile!
'Greenberry' - Last but not least is my favourite of the Spring collection,  a beautiful pastel sea-green with a certain brightness to it that just looks so amazing when on the nails (if you liked Topshop's 'Green Room' then you need this in your collection!)

Application is faultless, and they apply smoothly and evenly from the first coat - they only require 2 coats for full opaque colour and don't show up any 'gritty bits'.  They also dry amazingly shiny - the swatches on the nail wheel above were left without a top coat just so you can see how perfect these polishes apply! I personally add a top coat afterwards just because I like to seal in the colour for prolonged wear time.. but if you're a bit of a lazy nail-painter, these will be right up your street!

Benefit 'Go Tropicoral' | Thoughts & Swatches

A few weeks back now, I left my job of 4 years and decided it was time to move on to pastures new.  My wonderful fellow colleagues decided to suprise me on my last day with some lovely beauty goodies, Benefit's 'Go Tropicoral' being one of them, and needless to say I felt rather spoilt and very, very teary to say the least! As you can imagine, since then, I've been having a great deal of fun trying out the 4 products in the set - none of which i've tried before - a beauty blogger's dream I'm sure you'll all agree! Anyway.. I thought it was about time I took some photographs, and told you all what I think. It would be silly not to!

Go Tropicoral is a wonderfully packaged little set of 4 Benefit products all of which compliment one another, giving you a travel-sized set of all the must-have items for a 'coralista' themed look. The items are all 'miniture' sized, but you still get lots of product to use, and it makes for a perfect gift! Benefit also do the similar sets in different shades and tones - offering up 'Feeling Dandy' (based around their 'Dandelion' blush) and 'Surgarlicous' (including the 'Sugarbomb' blush) - so if coral doesn't float your boat, fear not...

High Beam | 'Luminescent Complexion Enhancer' | This is perfect for highlighting areas of the face, and I use this dotted along my cheek bones and on my brow bone. It brings a certain 'light' to the face that is both subtle, yet very flattering and natural - and it blends effortlessly well into the skin. The pink-y undertones work very well with my wintery complexion, and help to brighten any dull areas. I've also used this mixed in with my daily moisturiser for all over brightening goodness! I used their 'Sun Beam' highlighter throughout summer last year, so this has been a lovely little addition to my collection that is just a really nice all-rounder and one that will compliment most make-up looks and skin tones.

Cha Cha Tint | Mango Tinted Lip & Cheek Stain |  Cha Cha Tint is such a lovely strong peach shade that has a similar texture to that of High Beam. The only thing I'm not keen on with this is the fact that you have to work very quickly with it in order to get an even finish. I think I prefer it as a lip stain - it looks lovely on the cheeks too but I much prefer a cream or powder blush as opposed to a stain on my cheeks. I might change my mind in summer once my skin feels a bit more moisturised and smooth though, and I'm still very pleased to have it in my collection. Definitely will be saving this little beauty for summer..

Coralista Powder Blush | Oh my goodness. I'm so chuffed to bits that I've discovered this blush and it has to be my favourite of the bunch. I adore it. I've been wearing it almost every day and it provides such a lovely flush of colour to the cheeks. The texture and finish reminds me very much of Nars' 'Orgasm' blush - as it is fairly sheer and has a slight shimmer to it.  It's just beautiful.  When swatched, you don't get the full force of it - but it applies amazingly well with a fluffy blush brush - and sweeps on to the cheeks with ease, creating amazing definition and a beautiful coral flush to the cheeks that instantly brightens your skin. When this runs out, I think I'll be buying the full version. It really is a must-have in my collection as I'm a massive fan of coral/peach shades, and I really think this will look amazing on tanned skin in summer (all we need is a big fat dose of sun now please!)

Coralista Ultra Plush Lip Gloss | Lip gloss, I'll admit, is usually a dodgy area with me. It's very rare I find one that I can happily keep on my lips for longer than 5 minutes. This one, I can bare. Obviously, it still feels like you have gloss on your lips but it doesn't feel sticky or uncomfortable at all and it provides a lovely sheer wash of glossy coral colour.  I suspect this will look amazing paired with Cha Cha Tint in Summer once I manage to work up a bit of a tan. That said, it looks lovely worn on it's own even now, and I've taken to wearing it over Mac's Lady Danger for an extra bit of 'oomph'. A really versatile little lip gloss and one that's just my kind of colour! It also smells really fruity and yummy... 


Overall, I'm as happy as larry to have this little box set in my cosmetics collection! It really brightens up these long winter days and adds a little bit of fruity punch to my everyday makeup - what more could a girl ask for?! I love how it comes with a little 'Tips & Tricks' booklet, showing you how to use the products in different ways - it adds a nice little finishing touch to the set - it opens up to reveal a pretty decent sized mirror too. I really cannot wait to get some use out of this in the summer months, and I'll definitely be taking it away on holiday with me, that's for sure!

Chanel Rouge Coco | 20 - Rose Comete

Chanel Rouge Coco | Hydrating Creme Lip Colour in 20 'Rose Comete' | £24.00

Forgive me for the photographical overload here girls, but my first ever Chanel lipstick deserved some camera time.  After becoming a huge fan of Chanel's ever popular 'Bronze Universal' a few months back now, I decided that for Christmas, I'd ask Santa for one of their lipsticks - being a complete and utter lipstick-a-holic, i simply had to own one. I decided on the shade 'Rose Comete' after much debating. As much as I'd adore a classic red shade, I wanted to own a neutral shade that I could wear on a day to day basis and one that would compliment all kinds of makeup and outfits - after all, if I'm going to whip out a Chanel lipstick on my travels, I want to be able to whip it out on a regular basis don't I?! Rose Comete is a lilac, pink shade with a frosted finish. It has beautiful little flecks of 'seashell' pink shimmer running through it and has a gorgeous cool-lilac undertone to it that is both flattering on my skin tone and unbelievably wearable. It's also unlike any other lipstick I own.

Colour aside, the packaging is just what dreams are made of (slightly poetic I know, but it really is!). It feels weighty. It looks classy. And it applies so smoothly from the bullet. The gold accents to the lipstick casing and the ever-so delicate 'Chanel' writing inscribed in the side is just the perfect finishing touch (and I must admit I'm slightly uneasy about the fact that one day, I shall undoubtedly wear the lipstick down to this point - *sobs*) 

The application is really lovely - the dome shape of the lipstick itself makes it very easy to achieve a smooth, even line around the edges of the lips, as the tip is very thin and easy to work with. The frosted finish is very noticeable, so it's not for everyone - I find I do sometimes have to apply a gloss over the top if I'm having a 'dry lips' day as it does have a tendency to settle in lines slightly.. Aside from this, the colour is just stunning, and is perfect for those days when you want a little bit of glam in your life but don't want to overdo it on the colour.  Wear time is also impressive - for a lighter, sheerer wash of colour, I've not had any problems with having to over-apply.  I really want to try some of their moisturising lip colours now, as well as their Rouge Allure's - I definitely need a Chanel red in my life.. who doesn't?!
