My MAC Lipstick Collection

Now then. Before I begin, let's address the obvious - I have too many Mac lipsticks. 27 if we're going to be precise. I'm fully aware that nobody needs this many Mac lipsticks (or this many lipsticks in general for that matter...) but as a beauty enthusiast, they're something I both enjoy and appreciate having - for me, they really are the cream of the crop when it comes to lip products.  Over the past few years, they have become something of a staple in my makeup routine and I'm sure if you're a fellow lipstick-aholic like myself, you'll understand my deep rooted love for these beauties. They're a classic. Mac get it spot on the mark when it comes to lipsticks - everything from their sleek design, to the delicate vanilla fragrance to the outstanding variety of shades and finishes - I love it all - there's nothing like waltzing into the Mac shop and casting your eyes over the array of lippies! It's a beauty blogger's dream! My makeup never feels complete without a slick of lipstick or two, and I'll often spend a few minutes of a morning looking through my collection picking the perfect shade for the day.

So, I've decided it's time to share my collection with you all.  I love reading about other people's Mac collections as it always manages to spark some inspiration - it seemed about time I finally shared my own! Whether you're after your perfect shade, need some inspiration or simply just fancy having a nosey into my lipstick drawer, hopefully this post will be of some interest to you!  I've tried my best to organise this post by splitting them into categories, (this was so unbelievably satisfying to do - believe me) and I've provided all details about colour and finish, as well as the Mac description of the shade (I've included these in the title of each lipstick in quotation marks - I'll pop 'LE' at the end if any are Limited Edition) - I've also tried to give my own personal opinion on the colour. So grab a cuppa, get comfy and prepare yourselves because this isn't going to be a post of the short and snappy kind! I'm going to tell you which ones are my all time favourites, which ones I maybe regret buying, which shades are great for everyday wear, which ones are perfect for seasonal wear, which ones work best for 'statement' night out looks and generally give you a little overview of my personal opinions on how each colour works (or doesn't work) for me. I've really loved photographing this post and putting all of it together - I really hope you enjoy reading it just as much!

L-R: Creme D Nude / Viva Glam Gaga II  / Blankety / Half n Half / Freckletone / Velvet Teddy / Paramount

Nudes, Browns and Neutrals

Creme D' Nude | Cremesheen | 'Pale Muted Peach Beige'
The lightest of all my Mac lipsticks.  I had high hopes for this shade being my go-to 'everyday' nude but in reality, it's just too light for me - especially now that my lipstick preferences have 'matured' and I prefer something a little more brown toned and warm. I like the fact that it's quite sheer due to it being a cremesheen finish as it makes it a little more wearable, but unless I'm going for the whole 'smokey eye', big hair, classic 'Bridget Bardot' look, it doesn't exactly work for me.  It's definitely a handy one to have in my collection and it doesn't go un-used. It's just not my favourite nude.

Viva Glam Gaga 2 | Amplified | 'Pale Beige Nude' | LE
It was a risk when I bought this and it's one that didn't exactly pay off as this is just far too 'concealer lips' for me.  The yellow undertones only add to this effect and I'd never wear this alone.  It's a good one for blanking out the lips for further colour but for me, that's as far as it goes.  It's just too much beige!

Blankety | Amplified | 'Soft Pink Beige'
Now we're talking.  If you want a classic nude and you have a similar skin tone to me - look no further than Blankety.  It's got just the right hint of pink so it doesn't make you look 'dead' in the face and the amplified finish really compliments the shade. I love this one.  It's very much my classic 'true nude' shade.

Half n Half | Amplified | 'Creamy Pink'
This is a step up from Blankety. It still has pink undertones but is slightly darker and has more of a brown tone to it.  I really love this one - again, I love the amplified finish and I think this is a great one to opt for if you want a nude lipstick, but with some extra definition.  Its slightly darker than my natural lip shade so it's not exactly a 'nude' as such - but its understated, classic, and can be worn with the majority of makeup looks.

Freckletone | Lustre | 'Neutral Peach'
This lipstick is most certainly an unsung hero of the Mac lipstick world! This is one of my most used Mac lipsticks ever and I always get compliments when I wear it.  Rumoured to be a favourite of Beyonce, this shade is the perfect everyday shade for pale and olive skin tones alike.  The peach undertone really warms up your complexion and brightens up your entire face in a jiffy - I find it to be a great one through winter as it really does help to counteract any dullness in your skin.  The lustre finish makes it so wearable too - the glossy finish and sheer colour is buildable and perfect for on the go as you don't need a lip liner.  I reckon this might one of my most favourite lipstick shades I've ever owned...

Velvet Teddy | Matte | Deep-Tone Beige
I'll be honest, I hated this when I first got it.  In fact, I almost sold it! However, as time has gone on, I've re-discovered it, seen it in a completely new light and now I have to say it's one of my favourites!  It's definitely not for everybody - I personally love my 90's inspired browns and darker nudes and this one is perfect for defining the lips without making too much of a statement.  It's a step up from 'Half n Half' (as you can see in the swatches, 'Blankety', 'Half n Half', and 'Velvet Teddy' are all very similar in tone). If you have darker skin, this might be worth looking in to if you're after a staple nude.

Paramount | Satin | 'Reddish Brown'
I wasn't sure whether or not to class this as a red, but the brick-like tone to it and distinct brown hint made me pop it in the neutrals camp. It's a bit of a in-between-y isn't it!? This is my newest addition and, like Velvet Teddy, isn't going to be everyone's cup of tea.  It's definitely got that 90's vibe going on (think Clueless, checked skirts, chokers and the lipstick to match!) I personally love this - I can tell already that it's going to be my Autumn favourite! It just reminds me instantly of chilly afternoon walks, crunchy leaves and darker evenings... Definitely one of my more daring shades and also quite unique.  I'm planning on a full review soon so keep your eyes peeled if you're feeling intrigued by this...it's not one I tend to see on a lot of blogs!

L-R: Shy Girl / Cut a Caper  / Ravishing / Saigon Summer / Costa Chic

Peaches, Corals and Oranges

Shy Girl | Cremesheen | 'Creamy Neutral Coral Beige'
This is definitely another one of my all-time Mac favourites - and it's one that receives one heck of a lot of praise in the beauty blogging world! I find I have to layer this on a little bit to achieve the pastel peach shade seen in the bullet, but like Freckletone, it's another one of those perfect everyday colours to throw in your handbag.  The peachy tones warm the complexion and its really flattering when your skin is a little paler. I think Freckletone tops the mark slightly for me, but for a peachy creamy nude, this one is perfect.

Cut a Caper | Lustre | 'Mid-Tone Peach Pink' | LE
Sadly, this is a Limited Edition shade. I wish so much it wasn't as it's simply stunning.  I try to limit when I wear this simply because I love it so much and when it wears down I'll be a little sad to say the least.  I think I actually prefer this over 'Shy Girl' - its more noticeable, slightly brighter, and the pink tones in it work amazingly well with my skin whether i'm tanned or pale.  Again, it completely freshens up your complexion. It's a great all-rounder. Mac? Take note!

Ravishing | Cremesheen | 'Clean, Light, Peachy Coral'
This shade is a true coral.  Not too dark that it's overpowering, but noticeable enough to make a bit of a statement.  It's such a lovely summer colour and it's perfect for day or night. It can be a bit hit and miss for me - sometimes it suits me and others it doesn't - it's very dependant on your skin/eye makeup.

Saigon Summer | Cremesheen | 'Frosted Bright Orange'
I adore this shade - it's so pretty.  The orange tones are perfect for the spring/summer and set off a tan like nothing else.  The slightly frosty finish actually compliments it too and makes it much more wearable to similar, more well-known shades such as 'Morange'.  It's definitely a bit more 'out there' but i've worn this in the daytime to Uni and I've also worn it out in the evenings on holiday - surprisingly versatile!  It's definitely a true orange.

Costa Chic | Frost | 'Frosty Light Coral'
Cult beauty blogger fave alert! Whenever I go on holiday, I am never without this in my suitcase. It's amazingly pigmented, lasts incredibly well and is probably my favourite option if I really want my tan to pop.  It also seems to make my teeth look much whiter and brighter. It's super flattering on and the pink undertones make it really wearable.

L-R: Creme Cup / Plink!  / Fanfare / Bombshell / Speed Dial / Chatterbox

Mid-tone pinks

Creme Cup | Cremesheen | 'Light Blue Pink'
Another beauty blogger fave right here! Similar to 'Shy Girl' in lightness (does that make sense? Hopefully you get my jist there!), but obviously a pastel pink instead of a peach.  This is one of the first Mac lipsticks I ever bought and I've repurchased since. It's a classic nude pink - perfect for daily wear.  I love this in the wintertime when my skin is a little lighter. It looks amazing paired with a smokey eye.

Plink! | Lustre | 'Warm Seashell Pink'
I love Mac's description of this shade - because that's exactly what it is! It doesn't look amazing when swatched but on the lips this is a stunning shade! The yellow undertones are super flattering and the lustre finish gives a natural sheen. Like Creme Cup, this looks lovely with a smokey eye - but also adds a nice touch if you have next to no makeup on and just want something slightly coloured and glossy to pop on your lips. I love this one. It's quite buildable too.

Fanfare | Cremesheen | 'Mid-Tone Yellow Pink'
In my opinion, this is another one of Mac's shades that isn't overly raved about - but totally should be! I adore this one. It's a gorgeous, mid-tone pink with warm undertones and it looks gorgeous for everyday wear.  I have a full review of it here if you want to find out more about why I love it.

Bombshell | Frost | 'Bright Rosy Pink with Shimmer'
I feel like a broken record right now but this is another one of my faves!  I'm guessing it isn't overly raved about due to the 'frost' finish that everybody seems to dislike - but I definitely think some of Mac's 'Frost' finishes are well worth a swatch. I fell in love with this instantly - its so girly and bright.  I like it because the slight frosted finish makes it wearable for both day and night. It definitely lives up to its name - 'Bombshell' is the perfect bright pink - very girly and fun. I have a full review here.

Speed Dial | Cremesheen | 'Light Blue Pink'
I will always have a soft spot for this lipstick because it was my very first Mac purchase. Like Bombshell, this is a super girly mid-toned pink with a touch of brightness.   I've just realised that Mac describe it exactly the same as 'Creme Cup' on their website - strange! It's definitely more of a mid-tone as opposed to a light shade.  A great pink to opt for if you don't want something too bright but still want to make a little bit of a statement. It's almost like a slightly toned down version of 'Bombshell' - all the girly-ness without the frosty shimmer.

Chatterbox | Amplified | 'Bright Red Pink'
This is one of those shades that I really want to love, but I just don't. At least, not on myself.  I really don't suit this sort of pink unless I have a cracking tan! I don't think red-pinks are for me, sadly.  I'll wear it on holiday sometimes as I love the amplified finish and it does look lovely and smooth on, but I definitely seem to suit true reds and cooler toned brights much more.

L-R: Viva Glam Nicki / Saint Germain  / Show Orchid / Lavender Whip / Up the Amp

Bright Pinks and Purples

Viva Glam Nicki | Satin | 'Vivid Bright Pink'  | LE
Again, following on from Chatterbox, I do not suit this shade.  Bright, vibrant pinks are not my thing. I love how they look on other people but when I wear them they just look too barbie-ish and clash with my skin tone and hair colour.  This one is ridiculously bright - leaning on fluorescent - the swatch doesn't show it to it's true brightness and I think the camera picked it up more in the 'line up' shot.  Sadly, this hasn't had much wear whatsoever.  I'm tempted to give it another whirl over the winter - I know that it was loved by a lot of bloggers when it was first released so I must be missing something?!

Saint Germain | Amplified | Bright Bubblegum Pink
Ahh this shade... How it reminds me of my youth. I don't really favour this shade anymore but I keep it more for nostalgic reasoning ;) I used to love this bubblegum pink back in the day... It's certainly a bright one, that's for sure! I cringe slightly when I think back to it now - in my first year of uni i used to prance around wearing this thinking I was the bees knees. Oh dear Beth... You never know, I might wear it again one day but my tastes in lipstick have somewhat matured since this purchase...

Show Orchid | Amplified | 'Vivid Hot Pink'
Now, I'm aware of what I've just said about bright pinks not suiting me, however, the blue undertones in this one work much better.  This is my most coveted lipstick ever.  It's not one for the faint hearted - this baby is seriously bright! It's a gorgeous statement shade that makes your teeth look whiter, your tan slightly deeper and your skin a little brighter. It ticks all the boxes for a statement pink for me! It's earned a spot in my makeup bag for the next time I manage to jet away somewhere sunny...I have a full review and photos here.

Lavender Whip | Cremesheen | 'Light Cool Lavender' | LE
I'm still undecided on this.  I have a very love/hate relationship with it and I only ever reach for it through autumn/winter due to the cool lilac tone. It's quite a 'young' sort of colour and at the age of 24, I'm not sure I really suit it... maybe a few years ago this would have been one of my favourites (Barry M's '129' used to be my weapon of choice in my teenage years...Google it and you'll see exactly why this shade reminds me of it... ;)) - I must have been feeling a tad nostalgic when I went out and bought this. I think the cremesheen finish works in it's favour though and I actually do like this when I've applied a really light layer - if worn in the right way it can be really flattering and subtle. Again, it isn't for everyone but I do have a little soft spot for it despite it not being one of my most worn... I have a full review here.

Up the Amp | Amplified | 'Lavender Violet'
I must have been feeling rather brave when I bought this - I definitely had a 'YOLO' moment ;) Like Lavender Whip, I really can't work out whether I like this or not.  It's a statement shade for sure and I'm still trying to figure out how to truly make it work for me.  It's definitely quite 'out there' and I'm not sure if I'm really an 'out there' person when it comes to lipstick... it's definitely a stunner, but its one that needs to be worn with certain clothes and makeup to get it to work.

L-R: Lady Danger / MAC Red / Viva Glam Rihanna / Dark Side

Reds and Burgundys

Lady Danger | Matte | 'Vivid Bright Coral Red'
This is my statement summer red. I love it! The slight orange undertone is perfect with a tan and it photographs really nicely too.  I love adding a gloss on top of this one to make it pop even more - it's a stunning bright red!  Definitely a staple shade to have in your collection.

M.A.C Red | Satin | 'Vivid Blue-ish Red'
This is my statement winter red due to the cool undertones. Saying this, I find this shade a little more wearable with my skin tone (compared to Lady Danger which I only reach for over the summer) - I actually wear this year-round. It's my classic go-to 'pillarbox' red. Definitely one of my most used reds in my entire collection of lipsticks.  Another staple shade - if you're after a classic red, look no further.

Viva Glam Rihanna | Frost | 'Frosty Blue Red' | LE
Very similar to M.A.C Red but with a frosty finish and slightly brighter.  I have to say, this photographs amazingly well and the staying power is so impressive - definitely one to opt for if you're off for a night on the tiles. It has a certain brightness to it that other cool-toned reds lack - it almost has a cherry hue to it. I have a full review here.

Dark Side | Amplified | 'Deep Burgundy'
The darkest lipstick in my collection, Dark Side lives up to its name! It's a gorgeous, deep toned burgundy and I love the amplified finish as it makes it such a statement and you don't need to build it up. It's perfect for the winter time and I truly love it - I wish i could get away with it all the way through the year! It's the perfect vampy shade with a tough of gothic glam - it looks lovely with cosy winter jumpers! I have a full review here.

And there we have it, my Mac Lipstick Collection. I'm aware it's probably a bit excessive but they've always been the perfect pay-day treat for me and I've loved collecting them and discovering more about lipstick in the process. It's impossible to pick favourite but I definitely have my 'staple' shades I couldn't be without - hopefully you've picked up on some of my most-loved throughout the post but I'll probably do a post at some stage in the future outlining my ultimate staple shades if this would be of interest.  Anyway, this post has been rather meaty without me rambling on any further... I do hope you've managed to gather some lipstick inspiration or have simply just enjoyed having a nosey into my collection!

What's your favourite Mac Lipstick? Is there any shade here that you have your eye on for your next purchase?!

Mac's 'Viva Glam Rihanna' Lipstick

Mac Viva Glam Rihanna Lipstick | £15.00 | Link

Ok, Ok. I hold my hands up and admit I'm a complete lipstick addict - they have to be my ultimate weakness. Let's face it - I really didn't need yet another red in my stash but Rihanna's new offering for Mac's Viva Glam collection caught my attention in an instant.  I'm not sure whether it was the sleek, matte red bullet, the classic cherry red tone or the simple fact that Rihanna created it (do you need any other reason?!) - but I needed it in my life. I have to say, it's unlike any other red that I have in my collection and I'm so glad I gave in to temptation and impulse-purchased this little beauty (woops...). It's quite unique really - it looks completely different on everybody. Seriously, google it.  I was completely baffled when I went searching for reviews - it really does completely transform depending on your skin tone and colouring.  On some, it looks like a beautiful classic cool-toned red, and on others it appears like a pop of bright cherry red.  Either way,  it's stunning - although I can imagine this red isn't going to be loved by all...

Viva Glam Rihanna is a frost finish Mac lipstick (cue lots of people grimacing in disappointment - Mac's frost finish lipsticks are well known to be less than favourable!), however, do not let that put you off! One of my favourite ever Mac lipsticks has to be 'Costa Chic' - the frost finish actually compliments the colour and gives it much more dimension on the lips.  I find Viva Glam Rihanna to be very similar - the fact that it's such a pigmented, strong colour means it actually works very well with the frosted finish and it actually isn't overly 'frosty' whatsoever.  The frost finish does not effect the colour pay off and it gives the colour more of a sheen as opposed to a dated, 'wishy-washy' sort of look. The pigmentation is spot on - it's a very strong red that doesn't need building up - what you see is what you get.  It can settle into fine lines slightly but it's nothing a bit of balm won't fix and I don't find it to be overly drying.   The shade is described on the Mac website as a 'Frosty Blue-Red', and I have to agree with this.  It definitely does lean towards the cooler end of the spectrum. However, it has a certain brightness to it that makes it quite unique - I hate to use the word 'pop' (i shudder at such cliche words...) but really, that's the only way I can describe it - a pop of statement red. On me, it appears like a bright, cherry-ish red with a blue-ish undertone to it, but I've seen this on other people and it appears much more warm and bright.  The frost finish actually makes this lipstick for me - it gives that added bit of dimension and helps the lips to appear fuller - I personally find it works in it's favour and it actually looks very flattering. It's essentially a classic red with a little bit of a twist.

Part of me can't help but wish it had arrived in stores before Christmas as it would have been perfect! But you can never go wrong with a slick of red lipstick any time of year can you? The limited edition packaging is also a lovely little novelty! Of course, bare in mind that this shade won't be for everyone, and it's worth swatching in store before you buy - I admit I didn't exactly need this shade (I find it quite similar to 'Mac Red' but with added dimension) however, it's one that I know I will get use out of and I really like the slight shimmer it has to it. Viva Glam Rihanna retails for £15.00 and as with all lipsticks from the Viva Glam range, the full RRP (minus VAT) from the sale goes towards helping people across the globe effected by HIV/AIDS - so rest assured your mid-week lipstick treat is going to a good cause!  I have to say, this is the first time I've ever been tempted by the matching lipglass.  From what I've seen on other blogs, the two look absolutely amazing when paired together but sadly, me and Mac lip glosses don't exactly get on like a house on fire... (if you're a lip gloss fan - it might be just your cup of tea, though!). You can find Viva Glam Rihanna on Mac's website here.

Have you tried Mac's Viva Glam Rihanna? What did you reckon?

Mac's 'Fanfare' Lipstick

Mac Lipstick in 'Fanfare' | £15.00 | Link

It was a while ago when I added Mac's 'Fanfare' lipstick to my ever-growing hoard of lipsticks.  I must admit, I wasn't instantly blown away by it once I'd got it home and it was squirrelled away in my lipstick drawer amongst all of my other pinks and corals. When I swatched it in store, there was something I really loved about it, but when I popped some on at home - it just didn't click with me. You win some, you lose some after all! However, just recently, I decided to give it another whirl.  There's something about the yellow, 'seashell-pink' tones to the shade that really draw me to it and I remembered just how much I loved it in the shop. I'm not sure what it is - whether it's because I've switched up my eye-makeup slightly of late or the fact my skin tone is a little paler now that we've been through the depths of winter - I'm not entirely sure - but all of a sudden, I've discovered my love for the shade!

Fanfare isn't one of those hyped up Mac shades you hear lots about on blogs.  It's very much an unsung hero amongst the bunch! It's a Cremesheen formula - so it's very creamy and easy to apply.  The pigmentation is really good too - often, I find Cremesheens can differ with their consistency and colour pay-off, but Fanfare seems to get it spot on the mark and it's pretty impressive when it comes to wear time.  I have a few natural lines in my lips so I have to be careful when it comes to certain formulas making my lips look dry - but this one glosses over with ease and plumps up the lips in an instant. It's very much one of those 'my lips but better' shades and I find the warm undertones in it work very well with my skin tone.  I've been wearing my Urban Decay Naked3 palette to death the past few weeks, and this colour really compliments the eye makeup looks I've been going for - it's the perfect finishing touch.

Overall, I'm so glad I added 'Fanfare' to my collection.  I can't wait to give it a whirl in the summer when I have a bit of colour to my face as I can imagine the coral-y undertones will look stunning! It's the perfect shade for the upcoming Spring and I really do adore it. It isn't a nude so it won't wash you out, but it also isn't one of those false, overly bright pinks - it's just a lovely in-between and it's one of those shades that seems to awaken your complexion in a flash.  It's very pretty and natural - the perfect pink in my opinion!

Have you tried Mac's Fanfare?

A Vampy Lip Obsession?! | Mac 'Dark Side' Lipstick

Mac Lipstick in 'Dark Side' | £15.00 | Link

What's this? Two blog posts in the space of two days?! Yes, well, you might think I'm on the ball but if I'm being honest, I've just gone a bit skew-whiff with the ole blogging schedule - many thanks to final year uni work.  I will hold my hands up and openly admit that before I decided to go to university, I used to moan my way through the 9-5 and wonder why all the Saturday 'student' staff came into work of a weekend complaining about how hard it was to get a degree and how they wish they could swap with me for a while. If you're reading this, any of you, I'm sorry - I eat my words. I 'get it' now.  Anyway, schedules aside, just because I've been bogged down with work doesn't mean I haven't been trying out new items of cosmetic goodness - I am a beauty blogger after all - no amount of essay writing or presentation planning will stop me from Bird's Words-ing it!  This week, I happen to have added yet another dark berry lipstick to my collection of other dark berry lipsticks. Because you can never have enough dark berry lipsticks, right?

Yep. Mac's 'Dark Side' finally made it's way into my lipstick drawers.  If you've seen a couple of my recent lip colour related posts (here, here and here) you miiiight have noticed that I've become somewhat obsessed with dark, vampy reds and burgundy shades.  I must admit,  I've always been a classic 'pillarbox' red kind of girl, but I've thrown caution to the wind and turned over to the dark side (ahaha...sorry...) and have realised how pretty a statement dark red can look - even in the daytime.  It's definitely not a look for everybody but you'll be surprised at how much it compliments 'winter skin' - it seems to lift any dullness and adds an amazing pop of colour.  I like to pair mine with a flawless base, toned down blush and a fairly neutral eye - with either a thin flick of liquid liner or a light smudge of brown kohl across the upper lash line.  'Dark Side' is now the darkest lipstick I own - I'm not entirely sure I can go much darker than this without looking like an extra from The Adam's Family, but I'm getting quite addicted to a statement lip and it's become my go-to look for a good couple of months now.  The lipstick is described on the Mac website as being a 'deep burgundy' - and I'd definitely agree.  It's extremely opaque and being an 'Amplified' formula, the consistency is smooth and creamy, whilst providing a flawless look with amazing pigmentation.  Mac's Amplified formulas have to be one of my favourites!  I simply apply from the bullet or with a lip brush after applying lip liner (a must have!!) and I'm good to go.

If you're after a vampy lip, Mac's 'Dark Side' is worth a swatch.  It's dark enough to be classed as 'vampy', but not overly so that it looks gothic or too 'black'. It's a true dark burgundy shade and would look stunning on both paler complexions and darker skins.  Apologies for not showing a lip swatch - I'll be sure to do a post involving this little beauty nearer to Christmas time but I just had to document this new purchase! Overall, I have to say this has to be one of my favourite Mac purchases so far - it's definitely one of my more daring choices! It's not an all year round colour, nor is it one you can simply apply 'on the go' or everyday, but it's one that makes a statement and one that looks incredible when worn in the right way. I'm most certainly a fan.  Which leads me on to my next point - I'm thinking of doing an updated Mac Lipstick collection nearer to Christmas time since I did my last one a year ago (it's considerably bred since then ;)) - let me know if you'd like to see it!

Are you a fan of dark, vampy reds like me?! What's your current favourite?

Top 5 Autumn/Winter Reds

Swatches Top to Bottom | Rimmel Kate Moss '107' / Collection 'Prohibition' / Mac 'MAC Red' / MUA 'Shade 13' / Revlon 'Red Laquer' /

Autmn/Winter is the perfect time of year to really experiment with berry tones and statement reds.  A red lip is timeless and classic - and once you've found 'the one' (or in a beauty blogger's case - a fair few) you'll never look back.  A pop of red on a dreary winter's day always looks striking, and the whole build-up to Christmas is the perfect excuse to get festive with your lip colour.  Berry tones and pillar-box reds are my preference for the winter months, and I tend to lean towards orangey-reds in summer.  If you're a 'red lipstick newbie' it's worth baring in mind that what might look amazing on you in winter, might look a bit dull on you in summer and vice versa. So, this in mind, I thought I'd give you a run-down of my current Top 5 'wintery reds' in no particular order... I have worn the majority of these in different posts so I've linked those into the mix as well if you want a more in-depth look at the shades.

Rimmel | Kate Moss '107'
Ohhh Kate Moss. Your lipsticks sent beauty bloggers across the globe into a berry lipstick frenzy last year. A year later and I'm still addicted to the infamous '107'.  This is the darkest shade of the bunch and is a dark berry red with hints of purple.  It's very much a gothic twist on the classic red, and although it appears scary in the tube, it looks beautiful once on the lips.  It very much reminds me of Topshop's 'Beguiled' (post here) and is amazingly pigmented.  It's quite matte - so it isn't for the faint hearted but it's a lovely colour all the same.  Want to see what it looks like on? You can find my previous post on the shade here.

Collection | Deluxe in 'Prohibition'
I have written a whole post on this little beauty including a snap of it on the lips here if you want to read more.  This shade is my most reached for lipstick at the moment and has to be my current favourite.  I actually prefer this to '107' - although almost identical in shade, this one is a touch lighter and is much more glossy - although it's still strongly pigmented.  It's just the perfect consistency in my opinion and I find it so easy and comfortable to wear. I don't find it drying in the slightest (107 has a tendancy to be a bit drying) and I've been wearing this in both the day and at night - it looks lovely with a simple, neutral eye and a slick of liquid liner.  It's the lipstick I'm wearing in my current Twitter picture, if you're interested! I shall be doing some sort of post on the look soon so keep your eyes peeled!

Mac Lipstick in 'MAC Red'
This lipstick is an absolute classic in my eyes.  I love it.  It's a true 'pillarbox' red shade and looks so striking when worn. It's quite a bright red and looks amazing on the lips as it makes such a statement.  The satin finish and vivid colour it provides are just the perfect combination.  It leans slightly blue without being overly cool in tone, and instantly makes your teeth look whiter.  It applies like a dream and stays put for ages - it looks so classy and timeless. If you're after a classic, true red - look no further than Mac's 'MAC Red'.  I have to say Mac's Red lipstick selection is second to none. There's something there for everyone.

MUA | Shade '13'
THIS little beauty is my red staple and has to be one of my all time favourite reds.  I wear this in the day (I even wear it to Uni) and on nights out and every single time somebody will ask me what shade of red I'm wearing.  Every time I tell them it's a £1 special from Superdrug their little eyes light up with delight (I should really stop telling them shouldn't I? - I'm giving away my MUA secret!) It's extremely pigmented - probably the most pigmented of the bunch - and is so soft and creamy to apply.  It's a lovely, instense bright red and I like it because it isn't too orangey - it suits me in both the summer and the winter time without fail and if MUA ever discontinued it I would bulk buy a lifetime supply quicker than you could say 'product rave'.  True love right there.

Revlon | Red Laquer
This shade is perfect for those days where you don't want to be too 'OTT' but fancy a little pop of colour.  Similar to Revlon's 'Candy Apple' lip butter but slightly brighter, this shade is such a lovely, subtle orangey-red that is just perfect for every day wear.  You don't need a lip liner to wear it, you don't need to spend 5 minutes in the mirror pulling your 'concentration face' and you don't need a special occasion to pull it off - it's just the perfect understated red.  The orangey tone brightens the complexion without looking too sickly - and it feels glossy and smooth to apply.  I think of it as a watered down version of Mac's 'Lady Danger' with a glossy, buttery finish.  If you're interested as to what it looks like on, I wore it last Christmas in this FOTD.

You've got to love a red lipstick, right?  I'm addicted to buying them! My collection must house an entire spectrum of crimson shades now and one day I shall have to sit down and photograph them all because that would just be extremely satisfying....  I shall be sure to keep you posted if there's any more additions - I currently have my eye on Mac's 'Hang Up' but I reckon I might pop that on the Christmas list...

What's your favourite winter red? Any of these tickle your lipstick taste buds?!

Mac Bombshell Lipstick | (& a little FOTD)

Products used | Mac 'Bombshell' lipstick | Mac 'Harmony' blush | YSL Touche Eclat foundation in 'B40' | Bourjois Bronzing Primer | Art Deco Eye Kohl in Black | Urban Decay Naked2 Palette - shades 'Tease' (lid and lower lash line) and 'SnakeBite' (crease) | Nars Multiple in 'Copacobana | Ardell Demi Wispies | HD Brows in 'Bombshell' |

For ages now, I've been lusting after Mac's 'Bombshell' lipstick - a mid-toned pink shade with subtle flecks of shimmer. But since my collection seems to have bred somewhat the past few months, I thought I'd be sensible and walk on by. After all, I didn't need another pink lipstick, did I? Well, it turns out that I did...  Sensibility goes out the window when you're a lipstick-aholic! My intentions were good, honestly, they were - but I reach for lipsticks of the pink variety one heck of a lot, and this one really is a lovely everyday shade that I know I will get tonnes of wear out of.

Bombshell is a frost finish lipstick from Mac - not the most popular of formulas, I know, but I must admit I quite like the finish they give and certain shades don't appear as 'frosty' as others.  Think 'Costa Chic' (one of my all time favourites) - it only has a little hint of shimmer and is incredibly pigmented - exactly like Bombshell. If you get put off with the frost finishes from Mac and don't usually give them the time of day - I really recommend you swatch a couple of them - they all differ slightly. Bombshell is fairly neutral in undertone, but leans slightly cooler on me.  I think it's one of those shades that looks different on people depending on their skin and hair colour - I've seen this on someone with a darker skintone than me and it looked almost coral. It's a shade that would suit a majority of skin tones, and would look stunning with a deep, golden tan.  I would liken the shade to a cross between Mac's 'Angel' and 'Speed Dial' - it's definitely a bit of a hybrid of the two (with a pinch of added shimmer) and if you're usually slightly scared off by bright, barbie pinks, then 'Bombshell' might just be the one for you.  It's noticeable enough to be a step up from a 'pinky nude', but without looking false or too bright.

Here, I've worn 'Bombshell' with a taupe smokey eye and understated blush, (I've listed the key products I used for this look at the top of the post) - it's the type of colour that will look lovely both in the day or for a night out and I will definitely be throwing it in my handbag for uni next month. It is such a gorgeous shade and it looks stunning applied with simple, neutral makeup for a pop of colour without being too 'OTT'.  As for wear time, it lasts for a fair few hours on me, but I always top up reguarly anyway so it looks 'fresh' (I do this with all my lipsticks...creature of habit!).  The only thing with frosts is that they have a tendancy to settle into lines on your lips - so it's worth applying a lip balm beforehand if you want to give this a whirl.  Saying that, the formula isn't at all drying and glides on so smoothly and evenly - it feels very light with a hint of moisture, and keeps it's sheen for a good while before wearing off to a subtle wash of colour.  Overall, I love this new addition to my Mac-stash and I'm glad I gave in to temptation on this occasion.  I love it to bits - and it's definitely an underrated shade in the blogging world!

Mac 'Lavender Whip' Lipstick

Mac Lipstick in 'Lavender Whip' | Baking Beauties Collection | £14.00 (link)

Whenever I hear about a new Mac collection, I simply have to have a nosey. It just so happened that this new collection coincided rather nicely with the end of my final major project at uni and I'd told myself that I would treat myself to a new lipstick as soon as I'd finished.  When I saw 'Lavender Whip' had been re-released as part of the 'Baking Beauties' collection (I'm pretty sure it's was released a few years previous in another collection) I had to make a swift order.  Those of you who know me and have been reading my blog/following me on Twitter for a while will know I'm usually one for peach/coral shades or classic reds. But there's just something about Lavender Whip that tickles my fancy.  I always remember the first lipstick I ever bought was a pale lilac colour (cringe) - although I couldn't possibly pull off that kind of shade now, Lavender Whip is surely a nod towards my inner teenage self. It's fun. It's girly. And it's just a little bit different to my array of peaches and corals that spill from my makeup drawers!

It's a cremesheen finish, so it's not completely opaque and has a slight sheen to it - which makes it a little more wearable and more appropriate for wearing on a day to day basis.  I already own Mac's 'Up The Amp' lipstick, which was a great plum option in the winter months - but sometimes I find it a little strong to wear in the day, especially now the weather is warming up.  As you can see, Lavender Whip is just that little bit creamier and toned down. The consistency is right up my street. It feels very smooth and creamy to apply, making it non-drying and comfortable to wear on the lips. I find I get a good bit of wear out of it before I need to top-up the colour again which is really impressive to say the shade isn't overly bright or strong.  If you always had your eye on the purples and vivid deep reds of last season but couldn't quite take the plunge, it's worth looking into this shade.  It makes a statement without being too over the top - bringing a subtle edge to your everyday lipstick choice.

I guess it just adds a nice little twist to my usual spring/summer lipstick choices.  I'm a big fan of creamy shades so this is something I'm instantly drawn to.  It's not your average lipstick shade, but it's one thats suprisingly flattering and fun to wear. Fun being the key word here - it's very girly (without being pink!) and brings a little bit of colour to the face.  It brightens up a dull outfit in a jiffy! The collection is now mostly sold out, but I've spotted a few other items from the range lurking on some websites so it's worth having a little scout around if you fancy getting your mitts on this Mac favourite (there's also a gorgeous deep burgundy red and a pale orangey-peach).  I can certainly see why this little beauty was so popular a few years ago...

Have you tried Mac's 'Lavender Whip'? Do you go a little crazy over Mac collections like me?!

April Favourites

It's the beginning of another month. Which can only mean one thing. Favourites time! I do hope you have all been enjoying the rare occurrence that has been this wonderfully sunshine-y bank holiday! For those of you who are blessed to live in sunnier climes (lucky devils, you), it is simply an unwritten rule that whenever the sun decides to show itself in the UK, everybody, everywhere across the whole country must adorn their summer wardrobes, dust down their flip-flops and herd to the nearest watering hole. And stay there. Even when the sunlight is fading for the day and a mere strip of light on the pavement is all that remains of the excitement of the past few hours, we stay there. Until every last ray that we can possibly squeeze from the day has disappeared.  And even then, by heck are we taking our sunglasses off!? I love it when the sun comes out - it's amazing how much happier it makes you feel and even the simplest things like going for a walk and queueing for a Mr Whippy feel like the most exciting thing you've done since forever.  The pubs are full of bare beer bellys and football shirts galore, and the air is filled with many a whiff of BBQ's from every single garden on the street.  I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a red-hot summer now (even if red-hot simply means that we remain in decent double figures for more than the one week of nice-ness we usually get..)  Anyway, typical British rambles aside...here are a selection of my monthly loves..

| Moroccan Oil Treatment |
After using my mother's sample size of the Moroccan Oil treatment, it's safe to say I'm hooked. So much so I now have a fuller version.  You may have seen my post a while back on my love for hair oils (here), and my love very much remains the same.  I can't say I can tell a huge difference between this and my Macadamia Oil, but the smell of the Moroccan Oil is just divine. Honestly. I urge you to sneak a little sniff of this beauty if ever you get the chance. It's just what dreams are made of.  Yes, it's pricey. But it's worth every penny and a bottle like this would last you an absolute age! It leaves your hair feeling incredibly soft and nourished and I will never ever wash my hair again without applying some form of oil to the ends. Honestly, trust me on this - never again will conditioner simply be enough.  I really want to try their shampoo and conditioner now - my mum uses them and loves them to bits so I'm definitely on the hunt for some to try for myself now!

| Mac Turquatic Perfume |
The sun came out. So it's only fair that this little beauty came out too. If you have never copped a sniff of this summer-staple, I urge you to do so right away. Seriously, go knock yourself out and drown yourself in it. It's beautiful. Now, I'm no good with describing scents whatsoever, but I shall try to nonetheless. Imagine sitting by a pool somewhere tropical, cocktail firmly in hand and the sound of the sea gracing your ears. It sounds obviously cheesy, I know, but conjure up an image of your ideal sunshine getaway and this perfume is exactly what it would smell like. Right down to the tropical fish swimming around your ankles.

| Benefit High Beam |
I wrote about this product briefly a while back when I reviewed Benefit's Coralista set (here) and I've always enjoyed using it.  Ever since I first sampled 'Sun Beam' a while back it's safe to say I've had great admiration for these highlighters. The past month, I've been using this over all of my powder highlighters (my Nars 'Albatross' has taken a firm backseat for now) and I just love the dewy glow it gives.  You don't need a lot at all, and just a few dots of it along your brow bone and your cheek bones blended into the skin with a small fluffy brush gives such a gorgeous bit of dimension to the face without being glittery.  I find it looks a lot more natural than my powder highlighters and it's perfect for the slightly warmer weather we are having - I love that it looks dewy and glowy without looking false. It looks like your own skin. No glitterball-face in sight!  I even pop a few dabs on my chest area if I'm going out - it's such a versatile product, and one that I guess I didn't realise just how good it was until just recently. I'll definitely be buying the full size bottle once this runs out - and I really want to try Moon Beam now.

| Nyx Cream Blush in 'Natural |
This blush is one of my spring/summer staples (I actually have two pots of it so I have back-up!) and I included it last year in my 'Top 5 Summer Blushes' (you can have a nosey at that here). I have another shade of theirs and absolutely adore the consistency.  I'm really not a fan of cream to powder blushes as I find them drying - so this one is perfect because its moisturising enough to feel silky smooth on your cheeks but not so heavy that it slides off. Nyx have got the creamy texture spot on the mark and I get a good few hours wear out of them before they fade.  They don't go patchy either.  I simply love the shade - it's a perfect pinky-nude shade, making in the perfect summer companion.

| Loreal Super Liner Perfect Slim Liquid Liner |
OOf. What a mouthful! I'm a big fan of liquid liner. And a big fan of Loreal's.  I usually use their ever-famous Super Liner Carbon Gloss, but on a recent makeup spree I decided to throw this one in the basket instead.  I wasn't instantly fussed but now I find I'm reaching for it quite a bit and I really quite like it! It's different to the Carbon Gloss due to the slightly thinner, and less flexible tip that makes it more of a felt-tip styled liner.  It's slightly less glossy and looks a little more matte in finish. What I love is the the fact that you're able to vary the weight of line effortlessly, and cat-flicks on the outer corners of your eyes are much easier to achieve. I really like it. Stays put all day, a doddle to apply and a offers a little more precision than other liquid liners I've tried.

| Mac Lipstick in 'Freckletone' |
I've just realised I have no photograph of the lipstick in the bullet, but I've actually taken photos for a compilation of my nude lipstick collection to be posted soon so it will be included there.  This lipstick deserves a lot more recognition. If you're a fan of Shy Girl - then you will love this. It's a beautiful glossy mid-peach/nude shade that looks very flattering on both pale and darker skins. It's also rumoured to be a favourite of Kim Kardashian and Beyonce. Who can argue with that!? It's a lustre finish so wear time can be a little disappointing, however I can overlook this. It's such a gorgeous, glossy shade and one that I've been wearing almost every day since I bought it.

Also, before I tottle off to paint some more pictures for my children's book (the end is in sight!) I thought I'd be a little bit cheeky and mention the Cosmo Blog Awards. If you're a regular reader or somebody that enjoys reading my blog, it would mean one heck of a lot if you hopped over and voted for me here (it only takes a second or too..I promise)! My category is 'Best Established Beauty Blog'. I shall give you the biggest virtual hug ever if you decide to drop little old me a mention :)

What have you been loving in April? Anything here take your fancy!?
