The Contraceptive Pill | Do you know what you're taking?

Ok. So this is something I never ever in a million, trillion years thought I'd write but I just thought I'd offer a little insight into something that may concern some of you. I know this blog could be read by anyone in the world and quite frankly that's fine with me; I've always been pretty comfortable talking about this kind of thing as it's the way I've been bought up and at the end of the day, why should it be a subject that nobody speaks of openly whenever they should need to? Hopefully it might help some of you, and raise awareness of something that is sometimes skimmed over or avoided when discussing your contraceptive methods with your doctor.

The contraceptive pill is probably one of the most common forms of contraception used today. It's easy, it's fuss free and if you aren't a complete forgetful numpty then it's pretty simple and safe to use. Some of you may know that just before Christmas I was in hospital suffering from a pretty bad allergic reaction to some antibiotics. Since then, I've practically lived in my doctors surgery so much so that I might as well just pitch up a tent in the reception and ring a bell every time I need a new appointment. On a recent visit to see one of the doctors at the start of January, a female doctor went through my medical records (as they do before they prescribe any new treatments) and noticed what pill I was on. She was quite concerned at how long I'd been on it and why nobody had told me previously that I shouldn't still be taking it.  Now - the problem isn't the pill itself, the problem is the brand and type of pill I was taking.  I had been prescribed Dianette roughly 5 or 6 years ago. Dianette (which is re-branded as 'Co-Cyprindiol' in the UK) is one of the older contraceptive pills, and is no longer prescribed in the UK for use as contraception, but still used to treat skin conditions such as acne for short periods of time.  Without getting too technical on you all, it's basically a stronger dose of pill and the risks of taking it are much higher.  As you know, when you take the pill your risk of DVT and other conditions are increased - but Dianette is a much higher risk pill.

I never knew this.  I never thought anything of it until the doctor mentioned the issue. Coincidentally, when I got home and scanned through the newspaper, an article attracted my attention and almost made my heart jump out of my chest.  It described the tragic situation of a young girl who began to take Dianette and actually died of a serious blood clot weeks later (there's an article online here if you wish to read it).  This terrified me and I felt sick to my stomach.  I'm a massive worrier; ever since my trip to hospital I've been even more scared of things happening to my body and my health so you can imagine this added to my already anxious state of mind.  I immediately stopped taking Dianette and made an appointment with the nurse to talk through the situation. I since found out that it has been banned in Canada, the US and France, and is now no longer prescribed unless there is an extreme circumstance related to hormonal problems or skin issues - and even then, there is a limit as to how long you should take it.  I believe it is advised you take it for 6 months, so to put in perspective that I have been taking it for 6 years is quite worrying to say the least. There's an article here that explains how it has been banned in certain countries, and that it has caused deaths in women with symptoms related to Dianette. A few days after quitting the pill, I realised that I was feeling a bit 'iffy'. I noticed I was getting panic attacks extremely easily. I get them often anyway but the tiniest thing would set them off and I felt incredibly sick.  After this, the headaches began.  And I'm not talking about a little throb, I'm talking about the type of headache where it consumes your whole head and it hurts to move your eyes from side to side.  I felt sick beyond belief and for a good 2 months I had a headache every.single.day.  I woke up with one, I went to bed with one and I had a dull ache behind my eyes for the whole day.  My hair has also been falling out everytime I wash my hair in small clumps.  I have naturally thick hair and experience very little hair loss, so seeing this every time I step out of the shower is sickening and I can only hope it's a temporary issue (I scared myself reading internet forums and some people are stuck with thinning hair for years after stopping taking Dianette).  My skin has been a nightmare to control - I don't have spots as such but I've developed little tiny bumps on my cheeks and my chest - something I've never ever had.

There's more though.  After doing my research, it's been proven that there are links with this pill to miscarriage and infertility problems. Now, I'm only 22 so this type of thing doesn't concern me right now but the thought that I've been taking this pill every single day for 6 years or so makes me very worried indeed that it's done some damage to my body, and the thought that taking it might cause something like this really, really upsets me. A recent article I found states that 'some people experienced fertility problems and miscarriages after taking it and were told Dianette was the cause'. Very worrying.  I'm hoping that in a few months I will be my normal self again and it's simply my body having a bit of a mardy that it isn't getting hormones in a handy little pill! In the past I stopped taking another brand and had no problems whatsoever, so you can imagine how worried I am that I'm experiencing these things and it's been going on for about 2 months now.  If anything, I'm so annoyed that not one doctor or nurse thought to tell me that I was taking a pill like this.  Even when I go to the pharmacy to get my new packs they enquire why I'm taking this pill (if it's contraceptives you don't have to pay) and they never even mentioned that it's no longer prescribed solely for that use.  The hospital didn't mention it. Nobody mentioned it to me for 6 whole years despite many times being asked what brand I was taking, and although I'm thankful that this doctor informed me about the risk, I'm still a little peeved that it wasn't bought up before. Admittedly it might not be as bad as I'm making out but when it's your body and the situation concerns you, it's a big deal. When seeing the nurse to ask for advice, she gave a relieved sigh and said 'it's a good job you've stopped taking that'.  Why was it even prescribed to me in the first place? 6 years ago maybe it wasn't perceived as high-risk, but I deserved to know the risks if it was. And I had no idea.

Please don't think that taking the pill is going to harm you. It won't.  The newer brands contain lower doses of hormones and aren't going to cause you problems apart from a few side-effects now and again, if any. But if you're on an older brand of pill, please, please check with your doctor or nurse that it's okay to be taking it (and if your pill is Co-Cyprindiol or 'Dianette' then it's worth considering switching - in fact I urge you to change it as I don't want any girl to go through the worry I've been going through).  There's no harm in checking.  It's something that never crossed my mind and now that I'm aware of this I will certainly be taking more notice of things like this in future.  If Dianette carries risks like this then I think it should be withdrawn like it is in other countries. It's not fair playing Russian roulette with your body, your fertility and your future.  As females, unfortunately we do have to think about these things and in future I certainly won't be so complacent with simply settling with a brand of pill I'm given.  If I notice anything out of the ordinary I don't care how many times I have to bug the nurse - I'm going back again and again until I get it right and I know the risks for me are the lowest that they can possibly be. If you notice any changes in your body whilst taking the pill, especially if you've just started it, then it's worth checking up or reading the leaflet for advice. Every day, when you wake up and take that little pill, you're essentially taking hormones that create changes in your body and if it doesn't suit you then don't simply 'ride it out' or ignore it. I'm so sorry if this has scared some of you - I certainly didn't mean it to do so. But this post will hopefully reach out to some of you who might be unsure and actually highlight some of the risks associated with older contraceptive pills. If you do your research, you will be one step ahead. I wish so much that I had been.

  1. I am in complete shock at how long you were taking this pill before anyone noticed how damaging it could be! I can't believe the pharmacy didn't say anything to you, surely they must be aware of this, or i'd like to think they would be! Thanks for this post as i wasn't aware of any of this! xx

  2. I'm so shocked that the nurses/doctors didn't tell you this, how irresponsible of them?
I started using contraception a few years ago and they mentioned bits about how the pill can affect your fertility, but they never mentioned that it could have such bad side effects.
I chose to use the injection one as it's easy and I don't have to worry about it for three months. My mum's been on the injection for twenty years and she hasn't had anything bad happen health wise, so I thought it would be the best option for me.
I'm sorry this has happened to you, hun, it's bad when you can't even depend on your own doctor. Hopefully you'll feel better soon <3

  3. I can't believe you were never told sooner, thats awful! Its something you expect doctors/nurses to tell you as soon as, very irresponsible! Thank you so much for this post, I had no idea. xx

  4. I'm so shocked nobody thought to mention this to you especially considering its banned in other countries. I actually remember reading about that girl in the daily mail, such a sad story!i hope you start feeling better soon, there's nothing worse than panic attacks is there!xxx

  5. I cannot believe that nobody ever once questioned the time period in which you were on this. Surely you had to go to to the doctors in order to get a new prescription so somebody was sending you away with a new one each time. That should of been the place for them to inform you and to offer you an alternative contraceptive. What a complete oversight which could have been detrimental to your health, there isn't any excuse for that, especially after 6 years :(

I guess it is a good job you've stopped taking it now, at least you haven't carried on even longer unaware of the risks. I'm really shocked!

  6. Poor you! Sounds like you've had a nightmare. Thank you for sharing with us all, you've done a better job already than all those doctors and nurses you've seen in the past! I really hope everything is okay Xx

  7. That's terrible and terrifying! Sadly it happens somewhat often because medications are not tested thoroughly or not tested long-term. A lot are pulled off the market years after their debut. However, it is THEIR and the doctors responsibility to let people know and aggressively campaign against these dangerous medications. I can't believe not one person: nurse, doctor or pharmacist thought to mention it! Either they have complete disregard for another's safety and health OR they are not up to date on the happenings of their own profession. I hope they get sued, I'm sorry this happened to you! Thank you for spreading the word!!

  8. I think its absolutely disgusting that in the six years you took it, none of them thought to tell you this. Its scary that we rely on doctors to make us better yet they withhold information like this!?

I used to be on the pill but never found one that worked for me - it either made me put on weight, gave me headaches or just made me feel constantly physically sick so i stopped taking it altogether.

I hope you start to feel better soon! :)

  9. As others have said I'm really shocked no one picked up on this! I took Dianette for nearly a year a while ago and it was only when I started going to a contraceptive clinic instead of my drs that I found out you're not supposed to take it for that long. My dr never mentioned anything, and I had no idea it was banned in so many countries! xx

  10. I was prescribed this years ago and I was taking it for a full year before I changed it. It was making my acne worse so I was given a few different types after being prescribed this. It's so scary how much damage it can do. My doctor always said I shouldn't be on it for long periods of time but never actually said why :/
I hope you feel better xx

  11. Oh goodness me Beth, you poor thing! it's absolutely ridiculous how you were taking these pills for 6 years and no one even informed you about how harmful they could be. Sometimes I feel that people don't always get the information that they need and it's so frustrating and obviously in some cases like you've mentioned things that someone has forgotten to tell you can seriously be life threatening. I am so glad that you finally got told about those tablets. This post was really informative and I really do hope that it helps anyone who could possibly be on them now!

  12. Ahhh Beth this is terrible to hear! I can't believe you we're allowed to take it for six years and not once did they warn you of the risks or suggest you change to a new brand! If its been banned in some countries it's clearly not safe for anyone to be taking and it looks as though that poor girl paid the price :O disgusting! I personally don't take the pill as it the brand I was on gave me really bad headaches and the health risks acossiated with taking any pill in general really worries me. Much like you I'm a total worrier so the tought of putting unnecessary pills into my body freaks me out!! I'm so glad you wrote this post as I'm sure it will help lots of girls and warn people about the risks of this particular pill!! Xx.

  13. I have just found your post after seeing a tweet from Hannah Ripley with a picture of a Dianette packet saying if this is familiar you should read this post. I do recognise Dianette because I was in the same situation as you.

I can't remember how old I was but I was put on Dianette in my teens to treat acne. Then one day during a trip to the doctors to renew my prescription the doctor suddenly informed me that I shouldn't be on this and that I needed to come off immediately. I had also been on this for something like 6 years and the doctor explained that I should have been on this for I believe a year at the most. They changed my pill and as far as I remember I didn't have any problems at all.

However something else in your post has made me think. 10 years ago this year I was seriously ill with what the doctors thought may have been a brain infection and I was ill for around 4 months. I would never have even considered that Dianette may have had anything to do with this but I believe at the time I would have been taking Dianette or it may even have been around this time that I was taken off of it. The thing that has made me link the two is the headaches you describe. The major symptom while I was ill was the headaches which were absolutely horrendous, I couldn't bear to be awake and was sleeping at least 20 hours a day. My eyes were affected and I had double vision for a long time.

I am now seriously considering going back to my doctors and asking them to check my records to see if there may be any connection at all between me taking/coming off Dianette and the illness I suffered which has left me with reasonably minor but lasting problems.

Thank you for posting about this (sorry about the long comment)xx

  14. Wow, I can't believe how long you were taking it for before anyone picked up on it. I don't take that particular pill but I'm certainly going to some research around the pill that I do take. I guess we all assume that we can 100% trust doctors to know everything about the pills they give us, and then inform us. Try not to freak out too much by what you read on the internet.. I'm sure there are many women who's side effects lasted a short amount of time, and the ones who experienced hair loss for years will of course be the ones to write it on the internet. I hope you feel better soon and it was lovely of you to share this with everyone xx

  15. Im on dianette for my skin and have always had concerns about it as im from a higher risk group in terms of side effects, however know im a massive worrier and can be *slightly* hypochondriac - I also had no idea it was any different to other pills and assumed if my Dr prescribed it to me it must be ok. Thankfully I've only been on it for 3 months as I would feel awful if Id been taking it for a long period of time. Both drs I've seen to get my prescription from have really not mentioned any risks linked to Dianette itself and it definitely makes me wonder if after 6 months they'd still prescribe me another course - Im pretty sure they would.

As you said, you don't mean to scare anyone but its definitely important to be aware of the risks and also to take them seriously - I definitely haven't realised how potentially harmful this pill can be and will be seeing my Dr again if only for peace of mind. So sorry to hear about your experience - hope you feel back to normal soon! Xx

  16. Aww Beth :( big hugs :D i've heard of Dianette before but i've never been on it - since going with my boyfried it was only when we were getting serious that i started using the pill - Microgynon & i've not had any problems with it :) I know my best friend who had a kid, her periods never stopped after having a child & she's been on a few pills, she's now on one that i can't remember but that's helped her become more regularly :)

Have you ever thought about the implant ? I know people can experience different side effects one person can bleed for upto 6 months straight & one person can have nothing wrong at all
I also know there is a jag you can get that you get every 12 months - i think, I'm not sure but i heard people can experience having sore breats :/
and there is also the mini pill too :)

My doctor asks me everytime i go to renew my pill if i'm still certain this is the right pill i'm taking :) just for reassurance for both of us & she always takes my blood pressure & asks if i smoke or take drugs :)
but i'm suprised the doctors never picked up on the serious side effects that Daniette have/had ? I'm suprised nobody heard through word of mouth :/

sorry for the lengthy post lol but i hope you are feeling better & i'm glad you wrote this post as it has raised awareness of Daniette & the serious side effects that someone else could be experiencing :(

    big virtual hugs :D xxxx

  31. This is a great post Beth, really informative and it's good that you've raised awareness. Being in pharmacy, I didn't even know this about Dianette but I know it's not one of the CP's that are common. Ideally you're only supposed to be on the pill a certain amount of years but it shouldn't give you the side effects it did no matter how long you took it. I'm currently talking Micronor which is a mini pill, I am unable to have the combined pill due to my weight. I highly recommend that pill, I've had no side effects and it's stopped my periods, for me this is a good thing. I was previously taking Cerazette which made me insane, it is a horrible pill for me and really didnt agree with my body, making me put on weight and I had horrendous mood swings. I've heard that the combined pill Yasmin is used to help skin but each pill is different and reacts to everyone in a different way. It's a case of switching and changing and finding what works for you. I hope you are ok though Beth

  35. I was on Diane 35 (same thing, but called Diane 35 here I guess!) and it made me severely depressed, I got chronic migraines that made me physically sick - heart palpitations and body shakes. I was on it for about a year and that's when another doctor, not my family doctor, said that it was a very strong pill and that it likely was causing my symptoms. As soon as I was off it I felt a million times better and now my doctors do not perscribe it.. kind of freaks me out honestly.

  39. This was a great post and good to bring this up as I was in the same position I started my journey 4 years ago into the world of contraceptives and got the implant under my arm this caused much distress after half a year it started to show very bad signs and I also researched online the side effects so had to get it removed, I then went onto Dianette for around 2 years my doctor mentioned to me that it was stronger and that I need to come back every 3 months for check ups extra but never warned me to change the pill so this went on and just back in August I decided to just stop all methods of contraception and just go natural as they made me very ill and emotional and I just felt not myself and I read all these stories online about fertility and stuff so made me paranoid, the reason why I was on Dianette was simply to treat my skin from acne and it did a good job in that aspect but I did start to notice other negative changes to my personalty and body xxx

  42. i think its great to raise awareness of drug side effects etc. and personal stories..though i do think that some of the comments made by other readers can be misleading..like suggesting certain contraceptive pills to take because it has worked really well for them is irrelevant. As everyones bodies react differently a great pill for one women can be hell for another. I guess its just trial and error and having a good relationship with your GP but also being responsible for your own health. but thank you for sharing this, I do think its important to talk about =]

p.s i was on Dianette for 2 years as that was the recommended max time you should be,it worked really well and served its purpose (help my skin) and i moved on to another pill. so no complaints!

They changed my dosage/ make around a few times but never talked me through any of them when I wanted to have the implant taken out as it was making me extremely sick my GP actually refused for 6 months! Now at 18 I always go the contraceptive clinic as they actually know what they're doing. Shocking how little drs seem to know about what they prescribe!

  44. I was on Dianette for years up until last month, and my doctors had all explained the risks (most told me there was no hard medical research that proved anything really, just a lot of media hype). I decided to keep taking it because my acne was horrendous whenever I tried to switch to another pill, and the doctors were all happy to let me do so after explaining there was a 1 in 125,000 risk of developing DVT. I was happy with that stat as whilst it's high for the pill, it's actually pretty low risk in the grand scheme of things, and I just couldn't deal with my acne returning.

I was recently made to come off Dianette by a new doctor. I asked him for recommendations of medical journals documenting studies into the risks of Dianette as he didn't seem to have any real evidence, and instead he directed me to the Daily Mail (aka. the most sensationalised newspaper you could possibly read when it comes to health stories).

I was really unimpressed by his lack of knowledge, but I came off Dianette anyway and so far, so good. I've not had any weird symptoms, and obviously I'm happy to be on a pill with a lower risk of causing health problems. My acne has come back a little bit, but I managed to get referred to a dermatologist, so hopefully it should get sorted.

I can't believe that no doctor ever explained the risks to you, it's terrible and definitely not the service we all pay our taxes for! I think when it comes to health issues, we're all best avoiding stories in the press and looking for solid medical advice in journals etc. Newspapers will do whatever they can to sensationalise a story and make us worry! x
